Candids With Chickens

Our chickens are approximately 18 months old.  We looked for a long time on line before we decided on buying baby chicks from Randall Burkey Company.  We purchased from RBC because they have this great ongoing special called, "The Five Chick Special."  It allows you to purchase just five chicks which are shipped to your home.

Here comes Big Brenda right now.  Anytime you come out to the coop, they come right over to see if you have a treat for them.  They also find the shiny camera enticing.

Also of interest to them would be painted toes and anything shiny on your shoes.

This interesting looking French blue structure is our hen house.  My husband built this by hand.  It is actually our children's baby crib, repurposed.  The crib was the central framework and then he insulated the house and added a wood exterior.  The inside has been fitted with a perch and nesting box as well.  You can see the little outdoor run attached to their home for when we are not at home.

What do chickens do on a hot summer day?  They take refuge in the shade of an evergreen...

...or search out in the yard for some tasty bugs to eat.

They also wander over to the vegetable garden to see what kind of damage they can do.  Usually rollin' in the dirt or rootin' through the tomatoes.

The eggs are great to eat and the kids love them.  Not only are they healthy, but they come in an amazing palette of soft browns and blues.

Wow that is cool! I don't think my neighbors would be too happy about chickens! We live in a fenceless neighborhood it would be hard to hide them! haha
